The story of Hoop Club starts at the same time as my personal journey with basketball. Three American coaches who had played professional basketball around the world decided to settle down in Wellington, New Zealand and start up a community basketball club to pass on their wealth of knowledge.
As a quiet 7 year old kid I looked up to Angelo Robinson, Terry Stallworth, and Kenny McFadden as my heroes - but little did I know I was starting a love affair with the game of basketball that would take me halfway around the world! As a young man I was quite shy, and lacked confidence, but basketball taught me many valuable life lessons: discipline, confidence, teamwork, communication, loyalty and determination.
Most of all I learned that even as those qualities produced success in my life, that the most important lesson was the principle of giving back to those who were coming after you.
From its early days in 1996 as a small community club, Hoop Club grew to become the largest government sponsored sport in schools program in New Zealand. In 2011 those same coaches and myself founded the New Zealand Basketball Academy. This organization now has seen over 2000 players pass through its doors, hosted multiple camps with NBA All Stars and NBA teams, runs an annual tour with 100+ players to the USA, and has mentored over 80 student athletes who have been successful in gaining basketball scholarships to universities in the United States.
Launching in Bangkok, Thailand in March 2020, the Hoop Club legacy continues. Our vision is to pass on those same values Hoop Club was founded on, and to see the same levels of success achieved for young student-athletes and passionate basketball players here in Thailand.
